Echocardiogram
An echocardiogram (echo/ Heart ultrasound) is a graphic outline of your heart’s movement. During an echo test, your sonographer uses ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves) from a hand-held wand placed on your chest to take pictures of your heart’s valves and chambers. This helps the sonographer evaluate the pumping action of your heart.
Sonographers often combine echo with Doppler ultrasound and color Doppler techniques to evaluate blood flow across your heart’s valves.
Echocardiography uses no radiation. This makes an echo different from other tests like X-rays and CT scans that use small amounts of radiation.
Carotid ultrasound
A carotid ultrasound, or carotid duplex, is a painless, safe test that uses sound waves to make images of what your carotid arteries look like on the inside. By using the Doppler ultrasound technique, your sonographer can also see how well your blood travels through your two carotid arteries, which take blood to your brain.

You don’t need to do anything to prepare for a carotid ultrasound, but you may want to wear a comfortable shirt that doesn’t cover your neck and isn’t tight.
Electrocardiogram
An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a quick test to check the heartbeat. It records the electrical signals in the heart.
An EKG is often the first test you'll have if you have signs of a heart condition. You may need an EKG test if you have symptoms of a heart condition, including:
